Queen Angelfish

Queen Angelfish Profile
Queen angelfish get their royal title from the speckled, blue-ringed black spot on their heads that resembles a crown.

Decked out with electric blue bodies, blazing yellow tails, and light purple and orange highlights, Queen angels are among the most strikingly colorful of all reef fishes. Their adornments seem shockingly conspicuous, but they blend well when hiding amid the exotic reef colors.

They are shy fish, found either alone or often in pairs in the warm waters of the Caribbean and western Atlantic. Fairly large for reef-dwellers, they can grow up to 18 inches (45 centimeters) in length. They have rounded heads and small beak-like mouths, and, like other angelfish, their long upper and lower fins stream dramatically behind them.

Their diet consists almost entirely of sponges and algae, but they will also nibble on sea fans, soft corals, and even jellyfish.

Queen angels are close relatives of the equally striking blue angelfish. In fact, these two species are known to mate, forming natural hybrids, a very rare occurrence among angelfish.

They are widely harvested for the aquarium trade, but are common throughout their range and have no special protections or status.

Butterflyfish

Butterflyfish, with their amazing array of colors and patterns, are among the most common sites on reefs throughout the world.

Although some species are dull-colored, most wear intricate patterns with striking backgrounds of blue, red, orange, or yellow. Many have dark bands across their eyes and round, eye-like dots on their flanks to confuse predators as to which end to strike and in which direction they're likely to flee.

There are about 114 species of butterflyfish. They have thin, disk-shaped bodies that closely resemble their equally recognizable cousins, the angelfish. They spend their days tirelessly pecking at coral and rock formations with their long, thin snouts in search of coral polyps, worms, and other small invertebrates.

Lionfish

Pretty much everything about the venomous lionfish—its red-and-white zebra stripes, long, showy pectoral fins, and generally cantankerous demeanor—says, "Don't touch!"

The venom of the lionfish, delivered via an array of up to 18 needle-like dorsal fins, is purely defensive. It relies on camouflage and lightning-fast reflexes to capture prey, mainly fish and shrimp. A sting from a lionfish is extremely painful to humans and can cause nausea and breathing difficulties, but is rarely fatal.

Lionfish, also called turkey fish, dragon fish and scorpion fish, are native to the reefs and rocky crevices of the Indo-Pacific, although they've found their way to warm ocean habitats worldwide.

The largest of lionfish can grow to about 15 inches (0.4 meters) in length, but the average is closer to 1 foot (0.3 meters).

Lionfish are popular in some parts of the world as food, but are far more prized in the aquarium trade. Their population numbers are healthy and their distribution is growing, causing some concerned in the United States, where some feel the success of this non-indigenous species presents human and environmental dangers.

Great White Shark

The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality. As scientific research on these elusive predators increases, their image as mindless killing machines is beginning to fade.

Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites. However, most of these are not fatal, and new research finds that great whites, who are naturally curious, are "sample biting" then releasing their victims rather than preying on humans. It's not a terribly comforting distinction, but it does indicate that humans are not actually on the great white's menu.

Great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth. They grow to an average of 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length, though specimens exceeding 20 feet (6 meters) and weighing up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) have been recorded.

They have slate-gray upper bodies to blend in with the rocky coastal sea floor, but get their name from their universally white underbellies. They are streamlined, torpedo-shaped swimmers with powerful tails that can propel them through the water at speeds of up to 15 miles (24 kilometers) per hour. They can even leave the water completely, breaching like whales when attacking prey from underneath.

THE HARLEQUIN TUSKFISH

(Choerodon fasciata) is a beautiful large wrasse with a mild temperament. It is very colourful at all stages of growth and will accept most marine fare very greedily. Although not very fast growing, it will ultimately be expected to reach 14" (35cm) in the large aquarium.

THE FRENCH ANGELFISH

(Pomacanthus paru) in its early life is superficially similar to the Grey Angelfish (Pomacanthus arcuatus) with a black/yellow livery. However, the French Angel as an adult, is much more colourful. They are easy to maintain at all stages and will accept most marine fare. Potential ultimate size: 15" (38cm).

THE LIONFISH

(Pterois volitans) is one of the most commonly available and impressive species. It is generally very peaceful and once acclimatised to dead food, easily fed. The aquarist needs to be aware of the venomous spines and keep hands well clear. Once full-grown, a large tank is essential to allow other fish space to manoeuvre around this slow swimming fish. Other species in the same family can be successfully housed in the same tank, making for a distinctive display. Potential ultimate size: 14"(35cm).

Graysbys at Front Porch Reef

A group of Graysbys lurk quietly near the wreck of the Cavalier State at Front Porch Reef on the island of Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles. These Graysbys are common at Front Porch Reef. Graysbys are related to groupers, and may be the most common type of grouper. They are often found near the reef, using their camouflage for protection. A Graysby is about 10 inches long, and can be identified by its spotted body. Note the dark spots near its dorsal fin (the fin on its back). These dark spots will help you tell the Graysby apart from a similar fish, the Red Hind. The Graysby's dark spots are sometimes white.

The Tiger Grouper is a large and beautiful lurk-and-lunge hunter. Like other lurk-and-lunge hunters, the Tiger Grouper catches its prey by finding a hiding place in the reef and then waiting patiently for an unsuspecting small fish to swim nearby. Then, with a quick lunge, it opens its jaws to swallow its meal in an easy gulp. Many species of Sea Bass are lurk-and-lunge hunters, including Graysbys, Red Hinds, and Nassau Groupers.
This Tiger Grouper waited patiently in a small gully between two coral heads. It may have been waiting to be cleaned by a shrimp or a goby; animals that provide cleaning services to groupers and other large reef fishes.

A Black Jack cruises over McDonald's Reef, Grand Turk

This is a Black Jack. Black Jacks are fish that live in the open ocean and that are seen over the reef only occasionally. Black Jacks can be identified by their size, the color of their tail fins, and the size of their dorsal and anal fins. Black Jacks can be up to 3 feet long. This is slightly bigger than many other types of jacks. All jacks have a similar shape. But the Black Jack has a two color (black and white) tail fin, and has long dorsal and anal fins. The dorsal fin is the fin on top, and the anal fin is the fin on the bottom near the tail. The tail fin is also called the caudal fin. Notice this Black Jack has long, yellow pectoral fins, the fins near its gills on either side of its body. Although often a silvery gray color, Black Jacks can change their color to a dark brown or black.
Black Jacks are built for speed. They have a steeply sloping forehead and a body that tapers down to a narrow tail. The Black Jack's tail is deeply forked and swept back from its body. The Black Jack's shape reduces drag, and its tail is shaped for propulsion. The Black Jack is a hunter that catches other fish. It uses its speed to chase and catch its prey. They often swim alone, but may also hunt in small groups.
Black Jacks are fish of the open ocean. Their silver color gives them fairly good camouflage in open water. Many fish of the open ocean are silver colored, unlike the brightly colored fish that live near the reef. Black Jacks can be found over 1200 feet deep. Even though they are usually found in deep water in the ocean, they may sometimes swim near the reef. This fish was cruising along the top of the wall of the reef near the island of Grand Turk. It was curious about the divers in the water, and made one pass to check us out before it cruised off into the deep. It swam close to me, giving me a chance for this great photograph. This Black Jack was 3 feet long, which is about as big as these fish get.
Black Jacks are found all around the world in tropical waters.

Season: all year, size up to 1 metre, weight up to 15 kg. The fish There are two main species in the redfish family, the common redfish (Sebastus marinus) and rosefish (Sebastus mentella) , both of which are common in Norwegian waters. Redfish are found along the edge of the continental slope, at depths of 100 to 500 metres, although individual specimens have been caught at depths of up to 900 metres. In the Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean, redfish are pelagic and live in large shoals. Redfish migrate in the summer. Fully matured redfish have their feeding grounds in the Barents Sea, where they mate in the period August to October. In the winter, they migrate south to their spawning grounds off the Vesterålen archipelago. Fishery The largest catches of redfish are taken by trawlers in the north of Norway. In the spring, fishermen in this part of the country go out specifically to catch redfish along the edge of the continental shelf as far north as Bjørnøya. Secondary catches of redfish are taken all year in most of the Norwegian economic zone and in the waters around Svalbard. Fishing methods Trawler, Danish seine nets, nets. Use Redfish is a tasty food fish, with oily meat that stays fresh for a long time, but which tastes best salted.Sold as fresh filet and as salted whole fish or filet. Fresh filet can be fried or broiled and used in various dishes. You can boil salt Norway redfish. Nutritional value The fat content of redfish can vary quite considerably, but it usually contains approx. 1 gramme of omega-3 fatty acids per 100 g fillet. Redfish is also a good source of protein

Blackfish, common name for any of several fishes of dark color. In the United States the name is sometimes used to refer to the tautog. Other blackfish include a bass, the black sea bass, of the Atlantic coast, and a minnow, the Sacramento blackfish, of California. Whales of the genus containing the pilot whales are also called blackfish.
Description - vary in color from dark olive to dark gray in color with females and young having spotty coloration; white color of males chin give appearance of a "beard".
Habitat - inhabit waters from Nova Scotia to South Carolina; found in wreckage and structures below the surface of the water at depths of 60 to 100 feet.
Size/Weight - range from a weight of 1 lb. to as high as 25 lbs
